Caloplaca epiphora thallus and apothecia.

Normally this lichen appears as just a mass of bright yellow-orange soredia. And although several other lichens have the same appearance, only this one will produce a purple spot when touched by potassium or sodium hydroxide. Apothecia are rarely produced by this species so the lone individual in the picture was left as it has more value as a voucher specimen. In South Florida C. epiphora is normally found on bark. But in the rest of North America where it occurs, it may inhabit rocks, wood or soil.
