Diorygma poitaei unstained ascus.

Diorygma poitaei stained ascus.

Asci of most graphids are long and cylindrical as are those of D. poitaei above. The ascus to the left has been stained with potassium iodide with a potassium hydroxide pretreatment. The spores stain purple with this method. Although the ascus has become brownish, there has been no chemical change as it has merely absorbed the brown colored iodide solution. Asci of this species frequently produce less than the normal 8 spores.
