Letrouitia domingensis thin section.

In many cases the chemical make-up of an individual lichen is unique. One way of identifying lichens is to determine its chemistry. This doesn't have to involve expensive laboratory analysis. For instance, when nearly any part of this Letrouitia is touched with a tiny amount of diluted household lye (caustic soda), it becomes wine-red.
