Tephromela atra

Spore Ascus

Externally T. atra closely resembles a Lecanora. Fortunately for us there are no Lecanora with black apothecial disks in our region. The two genera can be separated only by microscopic characteristics. T. atra is unusual in its genus in that it is the only member that inhabits bark or lignum, the rest are found on rock.
