Glyphis cicatricosa

Spore Ascus

Thallus

Lichen Index

A thick, black carbonized exciple is a diagnostic trait of this species.  The hyaline hymenium is extremely gelatinous and only reluctantly gives the investigator a view of asci and spores. The addition of strong bases or, with some lichens, even acids are necessary to dissolve the gelatin to examine the interior parts of the ascomata.
