In this thin cross section of one of the craters the apothecia can clearly be seen. The dark area surrounding it is the thallus which is highly gelatinous and light absorbing in this species. The thallus also contains abundant crystals which are obscured by the gelatin but still visible as light areas in the left side of the picture and to a lesser degree on the right side also.
